The 8'5" Mini Mal is a perfect entry level surfboard in many ways. Performance wise it's a perfect beginner surfboard for kids and smaller sized adults. With good volume for it's size and low rocker it paddles easily for early takeoffs and building confidence. For the expert surfer it is a super fun small wave "just messin around and having fun" shape.  For the beginning surfboard builder the reasonable size and low rocker makes it one of the easiest to build fish-bone frames on the marker. Low rocker = less wood bending and complicated joinery.
